*Don't forget to check out the weekly vocabulary words in your spelling book.á

á
á
Writing: The 2nd graders are completing their American hero biographies and writing simile poems about spring.... spring is as refreshing as an ice cold glass of lemonade!á
á
Reading:áGRAB reading homework has begun... ANY reading counts! Also, try re-reading some of your favorite stories to practice fluency (AKA reading like a professional). Try giving characters matching voices. :)áá
á
á
Math:áWe will be working on Topic 11: Three-digit Addition and Subtraction. We'll be discussing different strategies for findingáthe answers. Remember:á

1) If there's more on the floor, go next door and get 10 more.
2) If the numbers are the same, zero's the game.
3) If there's more on the top, there's no need to stop.á

*Be sureáto check out the Math "work mats" that your child will bring home in their folder. There are all sorts of interesting activities to do together!

á

Strategies for Learning Our Facts:
1) Memorize!
*Turn around facts: á 4-3=1, 4-1=3
*Fact families: 5+2=7, 2+5=7, 7-5=2, 7-2=5
*Doubles: á á 16-8=8
*Count up: 16-13= 3 (14, 15, 16)
*Ten Buddies: 10-7=3

2) Count On/Back (Put the biggest number on your head and the smallest number on your hand)á
3) Count On/Back (Use your number line!)á
4) Draw a picture... slow, but true. :)á

á
Science:We will soon begin our unit on plants and insects. In the meantime, the children will take a closer look at engineers vs. scientists.á

First Day Notes
What a great first day of school! I can't wait to get to know everyone even better in the upcoming months.

A couple of things:

1) We have a short snack each day and the children have been learning the importance of: washing hands before eating, remaining seated while eating (to keep crumbs in place), recycling plastic, and washing hands and desks after eating to be respectful of allergies. Thank you for reinforcing these procedures at home. :)
*Milk is available for lunch via a form which has been sent home.

2) If you have not already done so, please return all new school year notices. Thank you!

3) Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. A note in your child's folder, a phone call to the school, or an email will do the trick (dana.frey@hanovertwpschools.org / dana.frey@htboe.org). I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Looking forward to an amazing year,

~Ms. Frey
